Hope District+ Rear Light
  • The District+ rear LED lamp has been re-developed to reflect the advancements in red LED technology since its initial release in 2010.
  • The LEDs have been upgraded to Osram’s high efficiency Oslon LEDs, as used in the rear light modules at the high performance end of the automotive industry.
  • The huge leap in efficiency has meant that we can maintain the high brightness of the original District lamp whilst increasing the run time with the 2600mAh battery to up to 200 hours. The lamp now features six power levels, three static and three flash settings.
  • The District+ rear safety light is bright!  Now that may sound like an obvious statement but until you’ve seen one of these on in the dark - amongst other lights, reflectors and distractions - you won’t quite believe it!
  • We tested the lamp extensively over an 18 month period and found it to tick every box on the list.  The most obvious thing came from those commuting - come rain or shine this powerful tail light really makes drivers of vehicles and other road users so much more aware that you are there.
  • You are given a wider birth when overtaken, not pushed along in traffic…just more visible and therefore SAFER.
  • Now, we aren’t suggesting that this means you won’t be unfortunate enough to have an accident, or at least a near miss - but it can’t do anything but help.
  • Designed, tested and CNC machined in Barnoldswick, England.
  • Light Source: 3 x Osram Oslon LEDs.
  • Light Output: 105 measured lumens, 135 generated lumens.
  • Power levels: 6 (3 x static, 3 x flash).
  • Battery: 7.4v Li-Ion. Compatible with both 2600mAh and 5200mAh battery packs, plus ‘piggy-back’ option via the included splitter  cable.
  • Burn time: 15 hrs – 200 hrs.
  • Charge Time: 3 hours (for 2600mAh Li-Ion battery pack from a fully discharged state).
  • Beam: 270 deg visibility.
  • Mounting: QR Band seatpost mount
  • Weight: 155g, with splitter cable.
Mr Bates Beautifully engineered and the brightest I've seen means vehicles give a wide berth
Mr Saville Very, very bright light. The strobe setting is probably too much for drivers to cope with in dense nighttime traffic but good for the open road. Battery lasts for hours. Weather and mud proof - I use this for commuting and mountain biking.
GP The BEST rear light available by a HUGE margin. Offensively bright on the brightest setting (too bright to use at night -on full power it would be rather anti social). The battery lasts ages and the build quality is excellent. This one was purchased to replace an 8 year old District+ that packed up last week. I can't complain at that having almost daily use for 8 years!! Top job!
Marley Fantast rear light, very bright and the usual superb quality from Hope, I run this with my hope r4 front light and can't fail to see or be seen, so bright I may have forced a small plane to land in a field near to where I was riding. If you want the best rear light on the market at the best price buy one of these from Merlin.
Mr Newman You will be visible to approaching traffic with this light. Low setting is good. Full power is great even on foggy days
ian Great rear light, very bright and you only have to use one hope battery. It comes with splitter cable so you can use hope front light at the same time. This was a bargain, thank you Merlin Cycles happy xmas to you all
Mark W Bright, bright rear light, if you get the SMIDSY (sorry mate I didn`t see you) comment using this light they were not looking!!
JW - Courchevel Due to the nights closing in earlier I wanted a rear light that would make me visible on and off road. I read many reviews and narrowed it down between exposure blaze and Hopes district + Merlin has a great offer on the Hope district+ with battery pack! So decided to pair it up with the Hope Vision R4+ and run the 2 lights via the included splitter cable using the R4s larger battery and slipping the smaller District + battery as a back up in my camelback - Trust me this set up is FANTASTIC!!! It does exactly what I wanted, gives amazing visibility and on full mode it s seriously bright - I generally leave it on strobe mode as it makes you clearly visible and gives good battery life... It is the usual top quality engineering you expect from Hope and easily worth the pennies.
SteveW I've grown quite a collection of Hope lights over the years (Original District, Vision 2, R4), having tried other brands before. Yes, there are brighter, cheaper, lighter weight options out there, but for me, Hope lights have always been the best compromise of all these things, with good reliability, and customer support second to none. I also believe there is no better made light on the market. This light is the usual quality from Hope. Almost worthy of being a work of art in its design and manufacture. I have used the original District light on every road ride I've done since I bought it (and many MTB rides if road riding will be involved) I use a rear light both day and night, regardless of weather, as I like to think I've done everything I can to make sure I'm seen. Given the countless hours and miles of use the light has seen (on average roughly 5000 miles per year), my original is still going strong, and is being transferred onto my Wife's bike for many more years service I'm sure. In the roughly 8 years I've had the light, it developed only one problem with a loose connection in the body meaning it cut out if you hit a bump in the road after switching on. I returned it to Hope (about 5 years outside the warranty period!!) to be repaired, which they did free of charge, replacing the cable, and returning it within 2 days! If the new light is anything like the old one for reliability, I'll be a very happy customer. Knowing the customer service you get from Hope if things do go wrong gives you added reassurance too. It now has an extra medium brightness static mode - the old version having only a low and high intensity (6 modes now (3 static, 3 flashing), over the old lights 5 (2 static, and the same 3 flashing)), and the 3 flashing modes now switch between a bright and dim red, rather than bright and off. This means there's never a time when you're not visible, and also means the rapid flash setting, which I never used on my old light as it was too severe, now becomes much less aggressive, and may become my new go-to setting. One slight possible negative (although too early to say yet), is that the brilliantly engineered CNC mount supplied on the previous version has been replaced with rubber O-rings which wrap round the seat post. After fitting the light, this seems a little flexible, and nothing like as secure as the rigid mount on the old version. This may be to allow some movement if you crash with many modern bikes having carbon seat posts? I've only ridden on my own since fitting so have no idea whether the light vibrates over rough ground while riding, but this is my only possible small niggle with a top quality product. There may even be a retrofit kit to allow the original mount to be used? Another point worth making - if you had the original light as I did, Hope have kept the same connector layout, so you can use the same charger with the new battery pack (or even use your old battery pack too) and save some cash over buying a full kit! I wonder if other companies I could mention who constantly change "standards" to force you to buy the latest version would ever have thought of doing the same (ahem - Shimano).....OK, I will mention :-) ! Onto the price, which I know from talking with other riders can put people off. Personally I think a quality light is just as likely to save your life as a decent quality helmet - maybe more so. Additionally, by the time you NEED your helmet - it's already too late, so the price being roughly equivalent is fully justified in my eyes for a way of avoiding an accident, rather than minimising the consequences of one. In summary, if you want a well made light that won't let you down, whatever the weather can throw at you, you can do a lot worse.
Martin F These are fantastic lights and this is my third, one for each of my bikes so far. They have changed the mounting bracket from previous models to this variant with rubber bands, still good but not as over engineered as the fixed mount. The light itself is bright, 500 lumens on its brightest setting of which there are six including a flashing mode, so there really is no excuse for not being seen from behind from a good distance. Just to be clear this is only the light and bracket as the battery pack is not included so make sure you choose the right one because they are so worth it.
gary if your doing a lot of riding in the dark buy this light, super bright, long battery life, quick charge time, I've got the first Hope district rear light, had it for 4 years now and battery still works fine, bought this one for my partner.
Nick B I went for just the light and splitter, as I already have two batteries that came with an R2. Looks bulletproof, set up was straightforward, although I did have to use the smallest 'o-ring' to attach to my MTB dropper to prevent movement during off-road riding. There are several modes, all are adequate and the brightest is ludicrous. I normally use the lowest setting with (brighter) flash and when looking backwards on a dark country road I could see the flash illuminating road signs etc. There is no excuse for drivers to 'not see you'. Have used it in extremely muddy conditions, rinsed it off afterwards with no issues. Only thing I would be careful about is to make sure to clean any mud or grit off where it sits against seat post / tubes as over time this could spoil the finish or paintwork. I hope this will last me a good few years. I have had issues with Hope light wiring in the past but this was quickly sorted out by Hope FoC. Not cheap but you get what you pay for here.
Mr Edwards An excellent product. The overall unit is exceptionally well built though it's a shame that the previous models aluminium seat post fixing has been replaced with a rubber hoop tie which seems to be the fixing of choice for rear lights these days.. That said, all in all, a brilliant product that is very bright .
Calvi "If someone hits you they'd have to be blind, I could see you for bloody miles" quoted an elderly farmer who had passed me with this light on. Mission accomplished, just what I wanted and the battery lasts forever, 30hours on one charge and counting. Only negative is size but then you can choose any 2 of 3 things. Brightness, battery life and small size.
Mr Boothroyd Utterly brilliant, high level quality, high level function and high level deployment. Think about how many 'cheap' lights you have gone through in the last 5 years then add up the total cost and time of replacing them. Now invest in this piece of Engineering and in 5+ years time you will still be using it for commuting or other night rides. I am very happy with the product and the safety it can offer when in traffic, more than enough options to cope with all weathers and conditions, night or day - Fog, low Sun in particular.
John Great rear light. High visibility and so easy to install and use. I really like the battery "juice" indicator, it takes the guess work out of knowing when to charge up! Look no further, get this rear light to stay safe and visible!
Mr Nitis Absolutely best quality light I've ever purchased with safety in mind. Exceptional performance in all weather conditions.
Tony Graham NZL I could not be happier with this light - it's solid, bright, dependable, and just works (and works well.) I love the 6 choices of light, i.e. 3 steady and 3 flashing. I use the light mainly for day rides and with winter approaching here in New Zealand it is excellent on wet, gloomy days, on narrow country roads during the day. I really do feel safer knowing it is making me more visible from behind. It is a beautifully engineered piece of kit. I've owned it a couple of months now and ridden it in lots of rain with no problems at all. The pull apart connection from the light to the battery is very reassuring. The best feature though is the excellent battery life. I do shift work i.e. I work 4 days then do 4 days of 4 - 5 hour rides, sometimes shorter, often longer. I charge it once and it lasts my four rides* so no fiddling after every ride and the fact it plugs simply into a mains powered charger is a plus for me. The process of purchasing from Merlin Cycles was easy too, especially as I am from New Zealand, and was one of the only places I could find to purchase from, as strangely enough it is not available from the other "big two" online dealers. * It would probably last longer, but I just charge it after every 4th ride.
Peter Baggaley Reassuringly bright on winter training rides with the sun low in the sky.
andy I already have Hope lights so I bought this to go on the back of my long-distance commuter, using the battery of the Vison 4LED on the front, previously my MTB light. First off, it is beautifully made, all CNC machining as per Hope. On full power the light is incredibly bright, brighter than a car brake light. You cannot look into it. In the flashing modes, it flashes to that high brightness level so it's very eye catching. The lower setting is OK for regular riding, if you are on a country lane and it's dark and raining, the brighter modes might stop a collision from behind. One down side: The mount bracket is very bulky so you have to tweak around to find a place to mount it where your legs won't come into contact with the screw heads. I wonder if drivers might run you over and then say they were dazzled by the light.
Mr Hext Great light. Very bright and good battery life.
Andrew Smith I bought this light for a mixture of commuting and general road riding. One of the flashing mode is more of a slow pulse which is not annoying to other road users but certainly gets you noticed. In the dull daylight we get in the UK, from October to March, this mode is very useful. Overall I am very impressed with the light. The build quality, mounting arrangement and brightness are all top notch. Buy one, probably the last lrear ight you ever need to buy with Hope legendary aftersales service.
Simon L Great light, when I was looking for a light that would be seen by cars from miles off in both daylight and night time I wasn't sure if I would find one, but this light is exactly that. Sure, the cost is on the high side, but it is a quality product and you can't really put a price on safety!
Mr Boyd No excuse for not being seen, piercing light on strobe. Excellent build quality and hopefully reliable for many years.
Mr Bates Bought to go with my Hope R4 now I can brightly go in safety top quality build and long life with Li-ion battery pack that can be used in parallel only problem was where to mount it as seat bag covered seat post where the light is meant to go. A bit of engineering solved my problem but maybe Hope boys can help
Baines Bought this for my wifes bike and she loves it to bits. Works great and perfect for the dull weather we seem to have in Hebden Bridge.
Baines Without question the best thing I'be bought in the last year since I returned to cycling after 20 years. I've tried all sorts of other cheap and expensive rear lights and this is the only one which has survived the nasty Hebden Bridge weather we continuously experience here in the valley. Expensive but worth it so you don't get knocked off!!
Mr Baines Great piece of kit which just works. Tried nearly all rear lighting solutions over the years and the Hope solution beats them all hands down. Expensive but works and unlike other (expensive) solutions I've tried, it doesn't randomly turn itself off.
Mr Bell Spot on once again from hope. Some good modes to use on the roads. Gives a force field around me on dark roads. Cars give a lot of room when overtaking. Can be removed from the bike in seconds. Faultless service as usual from merlin.
Mr Yates Great light, really makes cars give you room plus it's Hope quality and back up.Great price ans service from Merlin.
Mr Cooman Hope District will make you visible! I use the Hope district in combination with the Hope R4 and one battery pack with a splitter cable. This is a great combination for me. The District is very bright. On the lowest setting, it is usable for road,... second setting i use when riding in rainy conditions. Brightest mode I haven't used, but could be very useful when riding in foggy conditions may be. There are also three flash modes .
