At Merlin, we know just how important the right set of tyres can be. For this, we’ve asked the team at Merlin for their favourites to help you with your next tyre upgrade. Whether, it’s road, gravel, trail or enduro, our selection will have you covered!
Road
Challenge Criterium RS – Andy Mc in the Buying Department chose the Criterium RS as his first choice of road tyre for its handmade quality and low rolling resistance. He’s looking forward to using this during the summer months on his BMC TeamMachine.
Specialized S-Works Turbo AllRound 3 Tubular – General Manager Paul went for a unique choice of tyre with his Specialized AllRound Tubular. This tyre can be found on his special Colnago C64 for both its lightness and suppleness on the bike.
Pirelli P Zero Race Classic – Martin from the workshop loves the Pirelli Race for its all-round qualities. He finds this tyre is a good balance between speed and grip. If you’re looking for a reliable road tyre this season, the Pirelli Race is the one to go for.
Vittoria Corsa Pro Control – Our Warranty Manager Julian highly rates the Vittoria Corsa Pro for its soft composition. He finds this creates a much better compromise between the speed and grip needed on the road.
MTB
Maxxis Minion DHR II – Rob from E-Commerce has been riding these tyres for over ten years now and still finds them his favourite. He fits them both front and back and has used them across his downhill and enduro bike alike. There’s little room for error when going for such a versatile tyre like this one.
Schwalbe Addix Magic Mary X Schwalbe Addix Big Betty – Having tried both Maxxis and Vittoria in the past, I am still yet to find a combination as effective as this one. Schwalbe’s Magic Mary on the front paired with a Big Betty on the rear promises maximum grip come race day, especially when opting for the super soft compound.
Maxxis Minion DHF X Maxxis Aggressor – As with his road bike, Martin looks for both grip and high rolling speed in a tyre. For this reason, he’s chosen the DHF for the front and the Aggressor for the rear on his mountain bike. If you’re unsure of which off-road tyres to go for, The DHF and Aggressor are a great place to start.
Gravel
WTB Resolute – Joe from the shop highly recommends his WTB Resolute tyres for gravel riding due to their versatility. Through these tyres, WTB assures tyre swaps are a thing of the past due to their capability on a range of terrains.
Challenge Gravine Pro – Andy Mc concludes our selection with his choice of gravel tyres, the Challenge Gravine Pro. He rates these tyres for their wide tread width providing that needed stability when cornering on the bike. The tread pattern on these tyres is key in providing grip but also in shedding mud when the conditions get tough.
