We’ve been using the Lezyne Digital Pressure Drive mini pump for a while here at Merlin Cycles, with staff members carrying this nifty digital pump on social road rides, testing it in the Merlin Workshop and even using it during pre-race preparation at the latest round of the UK’s National Trophy Cyclocross Series.
Lezyne’s Digital Pressure Drive has been designed around their original Drive mini pump, one of their first and most popular hand pumps; Lezyne then integrated a low-profile digital gauge into a durable aluminium body to create a compact, lightweight pump that stores easily in your jersey pocket or on your bike with a secure frame bracket which is included with the pump.
So why have Lezyne included a digital pressure guage on this mini pump? Well, with an ever-increasing range of specialist cycling sub-categories, riding styles and tyre types there are countless benefits of keeping your tyres precisely inflated to recommend tyre pressures or your own personal preferences that you’ve established through your own riding experience. For example, this pump allows you to inflate your gravel tyres to an accurate pressure, striking a balance between gaining good levels of grip off-road and rolling fast on the road while avoiding the potential for pinch-flats. You’ll soon learn your preferred tyre pressures and will then be able to accurately replicate them when mid-ride punctures occur or when you’re changing tyres in the workshop, with the digital display automatically rounding PSI to the nearest whole number and bar rounded to the nearest tenth. The Lezyne Digital Pressure Drive is described as being capable of producing up to 120 psi (8.3 bar) making it ideal for high-pressure road tyres; we struggled to get near to that figure, topping out at nearer to 90-100 PSI but that sort of pressure is ideal for modern 25-28mm wide road tyres anyway.
This user-friendly mini pump features a Presta / Schrader compatible flexible ‘ABX Flex Hose’ to help prevent pumping force being directly applied to the valve and causing any unwanted damage to it – the ultimate worst-case scenario that can occur with some pumps that don’t have this feature – it’s cold and raining, you’ve punctured, your replacement inner tube valve is damaged while trying to inflate it – nightmare. A word of warning though, the Digital Pressure Drive mini pump flex hose screws onto the tyre valve and requires a slow and careful application, take your time to ensure you don’t damage the valve, particularly with cold wet hands!
We’ve used the Digital Pressure Drive mini pump to inflate gravel tyres, high-pressure road tryes, mountain bike tyres and cyclocross tyres; it’s been really helpful to be able to accurately apply tyre pressures and/or replicate them. During course practice at the recent National Trophy Cyclocross race we were able to fine-tune our tyre pressures to suit course conditions on one bike (28 PSI) before matching it exactly on our second cross bike before the race.
