Pedals fall into two broad categories, flat or clipless. Flat pedals favoured by many MTB riders allow riders to push down on the pedals and have an easy emergency dismount option! Clipless pedals hold the Shoe to the pedal using a cleat and give the rider the ability to pull up on the upstroke, rather than just pushing down. The shoe’s position on the pedal is also fixed which ensures correct foot position on every pedal stroke. A simple heal twist outward will un-click from a clipless pedal. Always remember, the left pedal and crank (non drive side) are reverse threaded so that the left pedal cannot undo itself while in use. Apply a dab of grease to the threads when fitting. Most new bikes come without pedals.
